A family one-two finish fell the right way for the first time for leading apprentice Chad Schofield at Randwick on Sunday.
The youngster earned bragging rights over his internationally successful father Glyn when Secluded scored a well-supported win in the Phoenixlr8 Handicap (1200m).
Schofield snr rode Green Tracer, the second placegetter who produced a big finish from the back of the field to get within a half length of the winner.
It was the first time his son had managed to figure at the front end of a family quinella since he started riding in 2010.
“Dad has beaten me in second place four times so it’s nice to get one back on him,” the apprentice said.
“I’ll be making sure to remind him later.”
Schofield has set his sights on winning the Sydney apprentices’ title and his win on Secluded helped extend his lead over nearest rival Adam Hyeronimus.
Backed from $12 to $9, Secluded raced behind the leader before driving through inside runners to take a clear lead.
The daughter of Hussonet appeared set for a comfortable victory until Green Tracer ($10) unleashed her spirited finish.
“She cruised behind the speed under her own steam but I was a bit worried about hitting the front too soon on a green horse because she started pricking her ears,” Schofield jnr said.
“But she won very easily and she has a very, very good future.”
Secluded, trained by Paul Messara, was having only her third start on Sunday and stepped into city grade after her maiden win at Newcastle earlier this month.
